psalm 149: vengeance

 In Psalm 149 we read:

Shout the high praises of God,

brandish their swords in the wild sword-dance—

A portent of vengeance on the God-defying nations,

    a signal that punishment’s coming,

Their kings chained and hauled off to jail,

their leaders behind bars for good,

The judgment on them carried out to the letter

—and all who love God in the seat of honor!

Hallelujah!

These verses reminds a holy war, very similar to the conquest of Canaan by Israel. Derek Kidner comments that our real enemies are the spiritual hosts of wickedness and not people. He writes:

The Apocalypse, for all its fiery imagery of final judgment, describes the church's victory as congruous with that of Cavalry. 'They have conquered ... by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death' (Rev. 12:11).

Praise the Lord because He is my Redeemer and Avenger.
